Swivel office chair in velour upholstery by Lystager Industri A/S, Denmark, 1970s

An office chair of Danish manufacture from the mid-1970s, signed by Lystager Industri A/S. The distinctive silhouette with its tall backrest and bold upholstery pattern places this piece firmly within the Scandinavian design movement of its era, which married user comfort with expressive aesthetics.

The construction rests on a rotating metal base that provides stability and freedom of movement. A tall backrest flows seamlessly into a generous seat, creating a form that envelops the body. Upholstered armrests are mounted on metal supports, visually separating them from the main body and introducing an element of lightness. The regular tufting pattern reinforces the upholstery structure while lending the whole a geometric character typical of 1970s design.

Lystager Industri A/S operated during the golden age of Scandinavian design. The 1970s marked a shift in Denmark away from the austere minimalism of the previous decade toward more expressive forms and richer textures. The velour upholstery with its checkerboard pattern in shades of brown and beige perfectly illustrates this turn — a material soft to the touch and visually warm replaced the more modest fabrics of the 1960s. Chairs of this type found their way into both offices and domestic interiors.

This chair works well as a primary desk seat, though its comfortable proportions also suit use as a lounge chair. The swivel function allows easy repositioning without standing. Seat height matches standard desk levels, while the depth provides full back support.

Condition is described as good. The original velour upholstery shows signs of use: visible fabric wear, minor discolouration, and localised upholstery abrasion. The metal structure has developed patina, and minor scratches appear on surfaces. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
