Description
A pair of lounge chairs designed by Noboru Nakamura for Ikea during the 1970s. The Bore model emerged from the collaboration between the Swedish furniture giant and the Japanese designer, merging Scandinavian practicality with refined Asian sensibility. These chairs have undergone complete upholstery restoration and now feature fresh green fabric with distinctive button tufting.
The structure relies on a chrome-plated tubular steel frame that simultaneously forms the base, armrests, and backrest support. The curved profile of the tubing lends visual lightness to the chairs — despite their substantial form, they avoid overwhelming a room. The seat and backrest form a single softly padded unit, while the diamond-pattern tufting organises the fabric surface and prevents the filling from shifting. Armrests upholstered in matching material extend the seat line, creating a cohesive silhouette. Front legs feature castors, allowing the chairs to be repositioned without lifting.
Noboru Nakamura belongs to a generation of Japanese designers who brought fresh perspectives to European furniture during the 1960s and 1970s. His work with Ikea reflected the company's strategy of engaging international design talent. Chairs from this period balanced affordability with ambitious design — chrome frames proved less expensive than traditional wooden construction while responding to the industrial aesthetic fashionable throughout the decade.
These lounge chairs work as a pair in living spaces, creating a symmetrical arrangement beside a coffee table or flanking a fireplace. The seat dimensions — fifty-five centimetres in both width and depth — provide comfortable support for one person, while the soft cushioning invites extended relaxation. The front castors allow easy adjustment of positioning as needs change.
The chairs are in good condition, showing wear typical of period furniture — minor scratches and small chips on the chrome elements, along with natural patina. The upholstery has been completely replaced with new fabric and foam, restoring seating comfort.
