Description

Italian glass vase crafted in the sommerso technique during the 1970s. The slender form, standing thirty-one centimetres tall, displays the characteristic colour transition of this method from deep blue through sea green to a transparent outer layer. The effect emerges from layering molten glass of different colours, each penetrating the next to create an impression of depth and luminosity.

The vase follows the classic proportions of Italian art glass: a narrow neck measuring just three and a half centimetres in diameter opens into a gently widening body. This silhouette combines elegance with stability. The sommerso technique, which involves dipping heated glass into successive layers of coloured material, demands precision and timing each addition must occur at exactly the right moment for the colours to blend without visible boundaries.

The 1970s marked a golden era for Italian art glass, when glassmaking workshops exported their creations worldwide. The sommerso technique, developed in the mid-twentieth century, became one of the most recognisable signatures of Italian glass tradition. Master glassmakers experimented with bold colour combinations during this period, creating objects that bridged functional design and sculptural expression.

The vase works equally well as a standalone decorative piece or as a vessel for single long-stemmed flowers. The narrow opening naturally shapes any arrangement, lending it an airy quality. The transparent outer layer enhances the depth of colour, which shifts in intensity depending on the light.

Condition is good with no significant flaws. The glass retains full clarity and colour intensity.
