Set of six Italian tumblers with coloured bases, asymmetric form, 1980s

A set of six Italian tumblers from the 1980s, their asymmetrical form challenging the conventions of traditional tableware glass. Each tumbler combines a clear upper section with a coloured base in a different hue from deep violet through green and blue to warm amber tones. The set exemplifies an approach to glass design where functionality meets a distinct artistic statement.

The slender, elongated silhouette makes these long drink glasses ideal for cocktails, though they work equally well for lemonades or water with citrus. The asymmetry is deliberate a slightly angled wall alters the vessel's proportions depending on the viewing angle, lending each tumbler an individual character. The coloured base provides an optical anchor that grounds the entire form and casts subtle chromatic reflections through beverages. The transition between the tinted and clear zones occurs gradually, without a hard boundary.

Italian glassmaking of the 1980s combined traditional techniques with modern formal explorations, channelling craft heritage toward functional design accessible beyond collector's cabinets. Manufacturers experimented with colour as a structural rather than merely decorative element tinted glass mass fused into the base became part of the vessel's construction. This period brought a formal boldness that allowed geometric precision to coexist with organic distortions.

Standing nearly fourteen centimetres tall with a seven-centimetre diameter, these tumblers suit both everyday use and more formal table settings. The six different base colours let guests identify their own glasses, a practical advantage during gatherings.

The tumblers remain in good condition with no significant flaws. They are ready for use as intended, and the coloured bases show no signs of wear.
