Description

A set of six Model 71 chairs designed by Niels Otto Møller, manufactured by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik during the 1970s. Each piece bears the Danish Furnituremakers' Control stamp, certifying adherence to the highest standards of Danish craftsmanship. The chairs retain their original natural leather upholstery in a warm orange tone, forming a cohesive ensemble ready for daily use.

Model 71 ranks among the most recognisable designs to emerge from Danish furniture making. The distinctive backrest curves in a sculptural sweep that follows the natural contour of the spine, shaped from rosewood-veneered plywood. Solid wood legs rise directly into the seat frame, creating a unified structure that balances visual lightness with lasting stability. The slender proportions of each element contribute to an airy silhouette without sacrificing strength — a hallmark of Møller's engineering approach.

Niels Otto Møller devoted his career almost exclusively to chair design, achieving a level of refinement rare even among his Danish contemporaries. J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, the company he led, continues to produce his designs using methods that combine machine precision with hand finishing. Model 71, introduced in 1951, has remained in production for over seven decades — a testament to timeless construction rather than passing trends. The Danish Furnituremakers' Control mark, awarded only to pieces meeting stringent quality criteria, underscores the craftsmanship embodied in this set.

Six chairs provide seating for a medium-sized dining table, working equally well with rectangular or oval tops. The ergonomically shaped backrest and padded leather seat offer comfort through longer meals. Seat depth accommodates users of varying builds comfortably.

The chairs show signs consistent with decades of regular use: minor scratches and small chips on the wooden surfaces, wear marks and discolouration on the lacquer finish, as well as scuffs and stains on the leather upholstery. Their condition reflects intensive daily service over many years. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
