Description
A set of alexandrite-tinted glass tumblers designed by Sergio Asti for the Italian manufacturer Arnolfo di Cambio. Created in the 1970s, these vessels represent the peak of Italian glass design, when everyday objects became a testing ground for experiments with form and colour.
The design combines geometric simplicity with sophisticated colouring. A cylindrical form tapering slightly toward the base gives each tumbler both stability and visual elegance. The purple glass, coloured throughout its mass rather than surface-treated, maintains consistent depth of hue regardless of wall thickness. Its transparency allows the shade to shift subtly depending on the light. The proportions of height to diameter ensure the vessels sit comfortably in hand.
Sergio Asti belongs to the generation of Italian designers who redefined industrial design during the 1960s and 1970s. His approach combined formal rigour with material sensitivity he treated glass not as a neutral medium but as an active element whose optical properties shape the character of the object. Arnolfo di Cambio, a Tuscan glassworks with traditions reaching back to the Renaissance, produced contemporary designers' work while maintaining artisanal quality. Their collaboration with Asti resulted in a series of tableware that found its way into homes and design museum collections alike.
These tumblers serve equally well for cold beverages or as decorative objects — placed on a shelf or windowsill, they draw intense purple reflections from passing light.
Good condition with no significant flaws.
