Danish Rosewood Chest of Drawers with Lockable Cabinet, 1960s

A Danish chest of drawers from the 1960s, veneered in rosewood — a piece that combines compact proportions with considered functionality. The warm, deep tones of the wood and the expressive grain pattern give it the character that defines Scandinavian design of that era.

The construction pairs a drawer with a lockable cabinet, forming a self-contained storage unit. The drawer features recessed pulls that maintain the calm, uninterrupted line of the front. Below, a hinged door opens to reveal an interior with an adjustable shelf. The whole piece rests on a plinth veneered in matching rosewood, lending the form a unified, resolved quality.

The 1960s marked the period when Danish furniture gained international recognition through the combination of craft-based precision and democratic design principles. Rosewood veneer, prized for its colour intensity and decorative grain, became a signature material of Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture. Even smaller functional pieces like this chest of drawers were produced with careful attention to proportion and finishing details — a standard that set Danish manufacturing apart from mass-market production elsewhere.

The modest dimensions allow the piece to serve as a bedside table with expanded storage capacity, an entryway cabinet for everyday items, or a desk-side unit. The lockable compartment keeps contents out of sight, while the drawer provides quick access to frequently used objects. Key included.

The chest of drawers is in good condition, with traces of use typical for furniture of this age. Minor scratches are visible on the veneer surface, along with small chips on the edges. Small losses have been filled as part of conservation work. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
