Description

A cabinet designed by Niels J. Thorsø, manufactured by Thorsø Møbelfabrik in the 1960s. This Danish piece combines a compact form with striking rosewood veneer, whose bold grain pattern gives the furniture its distinctive character. A proposition for collectors of Scandinavian design who appreciate both the aesthetics of the era and practical construction solutions.

The structure is based on a clean silhouette set upon four slender, tapered solid wood legs. The upper section houses a drawer fitted with two recessed pulls, while below lies a storage compartment enclosed by sliding doors. The sliding mechanism eliminates the need for clearance space when opening, allowing the cabinet to be placed even in narrower passages. Inside, adjustable shelve enable the arrangement to be tailored to stored items. The door handles, also set flush with the fronts, emphasise the minimalist character of the design and create visual coherence with the other details.

Niels J. Thorsø was among the Danish designers who created residential furniture for local manufacturers during the 1960s. Thorsø Møbelfabrik, producing his designs, contributed to the Danish design movement of that decade — a period when Scandinavian factories supplied world markets with furniture combining craft precision with functionality adapted to evolving living conditions. Rosewood, prized for its depth of colour and expressive grain, was among the most sought-after finishing materials of the time.

The cabinet will serve well as a bedroom dresser, a document storage unit in a study, or a hallway piece. The drawer accommodates everyday small items, while the space behind the sliding doors keeps larger belongings organised and out of sight.

The piece is in good condition, with minor scratches and small scuffs consistent with use. Small losses have been filled during restoration. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
