Description
PH 5 pendant lamp designed by Poul Henningsen, manufactured by Louis Poulsen in the 1970s. This is one of the most recognizable objects in Danish design history — a form that has remained in production virtually unchanged since its 1958 debut. The red colour variant gives the classic silhouette a warm, expressive presence.
The structure relies on a system of concentrically arranged shades with precisely calculated curves. Each layer serves a specific purpose: directing light downward, diffusing it, and reflecting it while eliminating glare. The bulb remains completely hidden from any viewing angle — the cornerstone of Henningsen's design philosophy, developed through years of research into how light affects human wellbeing. The matte metal finish further softens reflections, while the distinctive curved struts connecting the upper elements have become a signature detail of the series.
Poul Henningsen did not approach lamps as decorative objects. His work grew from the conviction that good lighting shapes the atmosphere of a space and influences the comfort of those within it. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen, a Danish lighting manufacturer active since the early twentieth century, allowed him to pursue this principle throughout his career. The PH 5 emerged as an evolution of earlier series — a universal lamp designed to provide pleasant light regardless of the bulb type used.
The lamp works beautifully above a dining table, in a living room, or over a kitchen island. With a shade diameter of fifty centimetres and height of twenty-seven centimetres, the proportions allow it to illuminate a space without overwhelming it. The E27 socket ensures compatibility with widely available light sources.
The lamp is in good condition with signs of use typical of vintage examples. The surface shows scratches and paint wear, with some discolouration and minor chips to the shade. The electrical installation has been tested and is ready for connection. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
