Description

A bookcase designed by Henning Kjærnulf in the 1960s, this Danish piece presents a distinctive character that departs from typical Scandinavian minimalism. The decorative door panels, shaped into geometric patterns, evoke the craft traditions of the region where ornamentation merged seamlessly with functional simplicity.

The piece consists of two sections: a lower cabinet resting on short legs and an upper module placed directly upon it. Between the enclosed compartments of both levels, an open niche with a gently scalloped edge lends the whole a lighter feel. The cabinet fronts are finished in oak veneer adorned with raised mouldings that form symmetrical motifs across each door. Solid wood legs and details complement the construction based on furniture board. Inside, three adjustable shelves allow the arrangement to be tailored to whatever needs storing.

Henning Kjærnulf belongs to the group of Danish designers from the 1960s who created furniture characterised by simple forms and clearly defined lines, executed primarily in teak and oak. This bookcase, however, represents another strand of his work — a nod to Danish furniture traditions predating the modernist era. The 1960s in Denmark saw designers freely combining the functionality of contemporary design with elements drawn from native craftsmanship, producing pieces of unique warmth and individuality.

The bookcase suits both living rooms and studies equally well. The enclosed cabinets accommodate documents, albums or tableware, while the open niche offers space for everyday items or decorative objects. Standing nearly one hundred and eighty centimetres tall with a width of one metre, it provides comfortable access without overwhelming the room.

The piece is in good condition, bearing natural traces of use: minor scratches, small scuffs and some damage that has already been filled during restoration. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
