Mother and Child Art Deco Figurine signed Rodin, European brown sculptural piece

This mother and child figurine in Art Deco style, signed with the name Rodin, represents a sculptural interpretation of one of the most enduring themes in art history. Standing at just under fourteen centimeters, the intimate form bridges the monumentality of classical sculpture with the accessibility of a decorative object intended for domestic display.

The composition depicts a mother figure in a characteristic protective pose, cradling her child. The mass resolves into a compact oval silhouette typical of turn-of-the-century sculpture, when artists sought forms that merged naturalistic expression with geometric simplification. The surface retains a texture suggesting hand modelling — subtle irregularities and tonal transitions in the brown colouring lend the piece a warm, organic quality. The proportions and treatment of the subject indicate influences from both Art Nouveau and early Art Deco approaches to figurative representation.

The theme of motherhood ranks among the most persistent in European sculptural tradition. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it experienced a particular revival, as artists moved away from academic idealism toward more emotional, intimate portrayals of the bond between mother and child. Small-scale sculptures of this type, often signed with the names of great masters or their followers, found their way into bourgeois parlours as objects combining artistic merit with personal significance. They offered an alternative to monumental works, translating their expressive power into a scale accessible to private collectors.

The modest dimensions make this figurine suitable for a sideboard, bookshelf, or display cabinet. Its presence introduces an element of classical aesthetics without overwhelming the surrounding décor.

Condition is described as good, with no significant flaws. The surface shows no chips or damage affecting the appreciation of the composition.
