Description

A chest of drawers designed by Kai Kristiansen, manufactured by Feldballes Møbelfabrik during the 1960s. This Danish piece combines the designer's signature clarity of form with a practical approach to everyday storage. The white finish gives the chest a fresh, timeless quality that allows it to work equally well in classic and contemporary interiors.

The construction rests on a rectangular body supported by four tapered solid wood legs. The proportions strike a balance between compactness and lightness — the frame does not visually overwhelm the space, while the clearly defined legs raise it above the floor, enhancing the sense of airiness. Four drawers feature wooden handles with softly rounded edges that fit naturally under the hand. This detail reveals Kristiansen's cabinetmaker's logic — the handle is not a decorative afterthought but an element derived from function.

Kai Kristiansen belongs to the generation of Danish designers who trained in the craft tradition under Kaare Klint and then transferred that knowledge to serial production. His collaboration with numerous manufacturers, including Feldballes Møbelfabrik, meant that well-designed furniture reached ordinary Scandinavian homes rather than remaining in galleries. This chest represents the democratisation of design — the conviction that thoughtful form and solid construction need not be reserved for wealthy buyers.

The chest works well in a bedroom for linens and clothing, in an entrance hall for accessories, or in a living room as a discreet base for decorative objects. The forty-centimetre depth accommodates folded garments, documents or photograph albums. The white colour makes it easy to combine with other furniture without imposing a particular palette on the room.

The chest has been preserved in good condition. Minor scratches are visible on the surface along with small chips on the edges. Small losses have been filled, restoring the piece to full functionality. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
