Italian Ribbed Glass Vase in Yellow, Mass-Coloured Glass, 1970s

Italian glass vase from the 1970s, crafted using the mass-coloured glass technique. A sculptural form that combines bold colouration with the geometric discipline of vertical divisions, creating an object equally striking empty or holding flowers.

The profiled body features deep vertical grooves running from base to rim, establishing a rhythmic pattern across the entire surface. Thick walls of mass-coloured glass cause the pigment to concentrate in the recesses while appearing lighter on the ridges, producing an interplay of light and shadow that shifts with changing illumination. The proportions a defined waist opening toward a flared rim lend the form a sense of movement while maintaining a stable, confident base.

The 1970s brought Italian glassmaking into a period of expressive freedom. Workshops across northern Italy experimented with saturated colours and geometric forms, responding to a market ready to move beyond the restraint of the previous decade. Mass-coloured glass, where pigment permeates the entire material structure rather than coating the surface, became a vehicle for this bolder design vocabulary. Warm yellows and golden tones, characteristic of the era, found their place in interiors across Europe from Italian apartments to Scandinavian living rooms seeking expressive accents.

Standing twenty-four centimetres tall with a diameter of fifteen centimetres, this vase holds its own as a decorative element on a shelf or sideboard. The profiled form keeps stems arranged as intended, working equally well with a single branch or a composition of dried grasses.

Condition is good with no significant flaws. The glass retains full colour intensity and structural clarity.
