Description
Italian glass vase from the 1970s, coloured throughout the mass in a vivid red. The elongated, slender silhouette culminates in an organically undulating rim that transforms a functional object into a sculptural statement. A representative piece of Italian decorative glass from a period when traditional craft met formal experimentation.
The structure builds upon a simple cylindrical body that gradually widens towards the top, finishing in a freely shaped, wave-like edge. This flowing rim was formed by hand while the glass remained hot each curve records the craftsman's gesture and remains unique to this piece. Colouring in the mass means the pigment was introduced into the molten glass before shaping, so the hue penetrates the full thickness of the wall and resists wear. The proportions nearly forty centimetres of height on a narrow base create an impression of lightness despite the solid construction.
Italian glassmaking in the 1970s drew equally on centuries-old tradition and the postwar spirit of experiment. Artisan workshops translated techniques passed down through generations into new forms suited to contemporary aesthetics. Saturated colours and organic, fluid shapes became hallmarks of Italian art glass from this era. Many such pieces were produced in short runs or as one-offs, making them sought-after collectibles.
The tall, narrow form suits single long-stemmed flowers or branches — lilies, gladioli or dried grasses display their structure without crowding the opening. The vase works equally well on its own as a decorative element, bringing a bold colour accent into any interior.
Condition is good, with no significant flaws. The glass retains its full colour intensity and clarity.
