Description
A set of six Italian pressed glass tumblers from the 1980s. Each piece conceals a distinctive air bubble trapped within its solid base a detail that elevates an everyday drinking vessel into an object of almost jewel-like quality. A gilded band encircling the upper portion adds elegance drawn from the finest traditions of Italian craftsmanship.
The slender, cylindrical silhouette rises to seventeen centimetres with a narrow diameter, ensuring a comfortable grip. Clear glass allows light to refract through the captured air bubble an effect most visible when the tumbler stands empty or holds a pale drink. The golden stripe running just below the rim provides a subtle accent that frames the form without overwhelming it.
Italian glassmaking in the 1980s drew on two distinct legacies: a centuries-old artisan heritage, and the postwar experiments of Italian Modern design that embraced bold combinations of materials and decoration. Pressed glass with controlled air inclusions married industrial production methods with effects once reserved for unique studio pieces. Gilding, popular throughout the decade, echoed a glamour aesthetic enjoying renewed appeal on the Italian market.
The tall, narrow profile makes these tumblers well suited to sparkling drinks, cocktails, or long mixed beverages. A complete set of six serves equally well at an elegant dinner table or as a decorative display arranged on a bar cart or inside a glass-fronted cabinet.
The set remains in good condition with no significant flaws. The gilding retains its clarity, and the glass shows no scratches or chips.
