Italian pressed glass tumblers with vertical ribbing, 1970s

Description
Italian pressed glass tumblers from the nineteen seventies. The set exemplifies the Italian Modern approach — a design current that merged the peninsula's artisan heritage with bold experimentation in form and texture. Vertical ribbing running the full height of each piece transforms a simple cylinder into a striking, almost architectural object.
The slender proportions — seventeen centimetres tall with a diameter of just five — reflect the possibilities of pressed glass production, a technique that allowed consistent patterning while keeping the walls light. The regular rhythm of vertical grooves does more than decorate the surface: it alters the way light travels through the clear glass. Depending on the angle, the ribs scatter or focus incoming rays, casting subtle reflections across the tabletop.
Italian glassmaking entered a period of intense experimentation during the seventies. Alongside traditional Venetian workshops, new manufacturers embraced industrial methods — pressing and machine forming — that brought considered design to wider audiences. Pressed glass, once associated solely with utilitarian ware, gained a fresh identity through designers who found expression in geometry and repetition. This set belongs to that current: an everyday functional object given deliberate, thoughtful form.
The tall, narrow silhouette suits long drinks, juices and cocktails served over ice. The ribbed surface provides a secure grip even when hands are wet. The tumblers pair easily with other period tableware — their neutral transparency neither competes with coloured glass nor clashes with ceramic pieces.
Condition is good with no significant flaws. The glass retains full clarity and the pressed pattern remains crisp across the entire surface.
