Description
Italian glass vase from the 1970s, crafted using layered colouring technique in pastel shades of orange, violet, white and green. The piece exemplifies the freedom with colour and form characteristic of Italian design during this decade, combining artisanal tradition with an experimental approach to functional glassware.
The slender cylindrical body widens gently towards the top, creating proportions suited for single branches or dried flower arrangements. The layered colouring builds optical depth successive glass layers interpenetrate, producing soft tonal transitions. The pastel palette, unusual for the dynamic seventies, lends the vase a calmer character, closer to Scandinavian aesthetics than expressive Italian pop art.
Italian glass workshops during the 1970s experienced a period of intensive formal exploration. The Venetian tradition, built on technical virtuosity and decorative abundance, gave way to new thinking about glass as an artistic medium. Designers moved away from classical transparency towards coloured masses, experimenting with layering, gradients and optical effects. Objects from this period combined industrial repeatability with individual character resulting from hand-forming processes.
Standing nearly thirty-five centimetres tall with a diameter of seventeen centimetres, this mid-century modern glass vase works equally well displaying tall botanicals or functioning as a standalone decorative element. The colour scheme allows pairing with neutral interiors where it becomes a chromatic accent, or with spaces maintained in the warm tonality of the seventies.
The vase has been preserved in good condition with no significant flaws. The glass surface shows no signs of mechanical damage or losses in the coloured layer.
