Description
A figural porcelain candlestick with an Oriental motif, created at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, merges practical function with decorative storytelling. The genre scene depicts figures in traditional Eastern dress captured in an intimate domestic moment – a mother with child beside a cradle, forming a composition that transcends conventional interior ornament. The multicoloured glaze lends the piece a vivid, painterly quality typical of European fascination with the Orient.
The composition builds its scene around the central candle holder, which rises organically from the tableau – the female figure appears to support the functional element, making it an integral part of the narrative. Glazed ceramic allowed for careful rendering of costume and facial details characteristic of figural porcelain from this period. The proportions – nearly equal height and width give the object visual stability and a certain monumentality despite its intimate scale.
The turn of the century saw European ceramic manufacturers eagerly embracing Oriental motifs in response to the fashion known as Japonisme and Chinoiserie. Genre scenes from the Far East, often idealised and filtered through Western imagination, adorned bourgeois parlours as testimony to their owners' cosmopolitan tastes. Figural candlesticks served a dual purpose – functional during evening gatherings and decorative in daylight, when they became standalone ornaments for sideboards or mantlepieces. Such objects bridged ceramic craft and artistic ambition, occupying the space between applied art and collector's curiosity.
This candlestick works well as an element in eclectic interiors or as an accent in contemporary spaces where a historical object introduces contrast and depth. Standing twenty-seven centimetres tall, it can be displayed on a shelf, sideboard, or in a vitrine alongside other period pieces.
Condition is rated as good with no significant flaws. The glazed ceramic retains its colour intensity and the legibility of figural details.
