A Danish rosewood bookcase from the 1960s – a set comprising two units with shelves and a bar cabinet

This Danish bookcase from the 1960s, finished in rosewood veneer, comprises two modules that together form an impressive wall unit. The design combines a monumental scale with the precision of craftsmanship characteristic of Scandinavian craftsmanship of that decade. The warm, rich colour of the rosewood veneer lends the piece a distinctive character that dominates the space without overwhelming it with a heavy form.

The structure is based on two symmetrical modules placed side by side. Each combines a closed base with an open upper section, creating a well-thought-out hierarchy of space. The lower cabinets, with doors and drawers, provide discreet storage space, whilst the upper sections offer open display areas, fitted with adjustable shelves and compartments, as well as a lockable bar unit concealing three small drawers.

The 1960s in Danish furniture design marked a golden age for the production of bookcase and shelving systems. Growing collections of books, records and documents called for furniture that combined ample storage capacity with an elegance befitting the living room. Rosewood, prized for the depth of its grain and warm tone, became the material of choice for such designs, lending interiors a character that is both stately and cosy.

Measuring over two hundred and forty centimetres in width, this set forms a full-length bookcase wall. It can accommodate an extensive book collection, a record collection, documents from a home archive, as well as decorative items displayed on open shelves.

The bookcase is in good condition. There are minor scratches and slight dents visible on the veneer surface, resulting from several decades of use. Gaps in the wooden veneer have been filled, restoring the piece to full functionality. More significant signs of wear are also shown in the photographs in order to reflect the actual condition of the piece as faithfully as possible.
