Danish pine veneer chest of drawers with six drawers, 1970s

A Danish chest of drawers from the 1970s, embodying the functional, restrained character of Scandinavian design. Pine veneer covering the entire form gives this piece a warm, light appearance that pairs naturally with mid-century modern interiors. Recessed metal handles provide the only decorative accent, emphasizing the minimalist aesthetic of the design.

The construction follows a straightforward vertical form housing six drawers stacked one above another. Each drawer features a pair of handles with square escutcheons and semicircular pulls — a solution typical of Danish furniture design in the seventies, combining ease of use with visual economy. The chest rests on a dark, narrow base that visually lifts the body and lends lightness despite its compact proportions. Pine veneer with a distinctive grain pattern covers the fronts, top, and sides, creating a cohesive visual whole.

Danish design of the 1970s continued the tradition of democratizing good design, initiated by the mid-century masters. During this period, manufacturers increasingly turned to pine as an alternative to more expensive wood species, responding to growing demand for affordable yet quality furniture. Chests of drawers like this one were created with everyday practical needs in mind — built to serve reliably without losing either functionality or aesthetic value.

Five generous drawers provide organized storage for clothing, linens, or documents. The modest depth allows placement even in narrower spaces — a bedroom, hallway, or study — without overwhelming the interior. The top surface height also suits use as a console.

The chest of drawers has been preserved in good condition, with traces of use reflecting its history in domestic settings. Minor scratches and small chips are visible on the surfaces. Small losses have been filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
