Description
A Danish chest of drawers from the 1970s, embodying the Danish Modern aesthetic in an uncommon vertical column format. The slender silhouette and warm tone of oak veneer distinguish this piece from the horizontal configurations more typical of Scandinavian furniture design.
The construction centres on nine drawers stacked vertically, forming a cohesive tower-like form. Each drawer front features a linear metal handle that emphasises the rhythmic division of the façade. The cabinet rests on a dark painted base that visually lifts the piece from the floor, lending an impression of lightness despite its substantial height. Building a narrow yet tall column required careful structural consideration, achieved here through a solid board construction finished in oak veneer.
The 1970s marked a period of mature confidence in Danish furniture making, when earlier principles of merging function with form had become fully integrated into everyday domestic solutions. Columnar storage answered the spatial demands of smaller apartments, where floor area was precious and furniture needed to grow upward rather than outward. Oak remained a favoured choice for its durability and warm character, qualities that complemented the restrained interiors of the era.
Nine drawers provide organised storage for clothing, accessories, documents, or collections, each level keeping a different category within easy reach. The narrow footprint suits a bedroom alcove, an entrance hall, or even a bathroom, wherever vertical space can be utilised without sacrificing floor area.
The chest is in good condition, showing minor scratches and small chips consistent with decades of use. Small losses have been filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
