Pair of Danish oak veneer bedside cabinets on black legs, 1970s

A pair of Danish bedside cabinets from the 1970s, veneered in oak and raised on slender black legs. The set retains the visual coherence typical of Scandinavian design from that decade — warm, geometric wooden forms set against a graphic black base create a striking contrast that remains relevant in contemporary interiors.

Both cabinets share the same construction: compact, rectangular bodies mounted on four solid wood legs that taper downward. The fronts feature drop-down doors fitted with wooden handles, providing access to the interior storage space. Oak veneer covers the entire surface of the bodies, displaying the distinctive grain pattern of the wood. The wooden handles sit flush with the front panels, reinforcing the minimalist character of the design.

The 1970s in Denmark marked a period when modernist design principles extended to smaller domestic furniture. Bedside cabinets, vanity tables and occasional pieces adopted the same proportions and details developed for larger furniture — the same tapered legs, the same fine wood veneers, the same attention to ensemble coherence. Danish manufacturers, even smaller workshops, approached bedroom furniture with the same seriousness they brought to statement sideboards and shelving systems.

The pair works naturally as bedside cabinets flanking a bed, but equally as side tables beside armchairs or a sofa. Each cabinet interior accommodates books, documents or personal items that benefit from being close at hand yet out of sight.

Condition is good. Minor scratches and small chips are visible on the surfaces. Small losses have been filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
