Description
A Danish display cabinet from the 1960s, veneered in oak — a piece that combines storage with presentation. The distinctive arrangement of glazed compartments and open shelving represents the Scandinavian approach to domestic organisation, where every object has its place yet remains visible.
The structure divides the cabinet into distinct zones. Glazed doors with delicate mullion detailing protect the contents while allowing them to be displayed. Open shelves at the top and bottom provide space for everyday items or decorative objects. The whole rests on slender painted legs that lift the piece visually from the floor, lending it the lightness characteristic of Scandinavian modernism. Built-in lighting highlights displayed objects, while adjustable shelves allow the interior arrangement to be adapted as needs change.
The 1960s marked a period when Danish furniture design reached full maturity. Designers and manufacturers refined the principles established in the previous decade, emphasising functionality and the democratisation of good design. Display cabinets gained prominence as furniture that merged practicality with a representative function — providing order for growing collections of books, ceramics and mementoes while presenting them as part of the interior scheme.
This display cabinet will serve well in a living room as the centrepiece for a collection of porcelain or art glass, in a study for books and albums, or in a dining room for tableware. The modest depth allows placement even against narrower walls without overwhelming the space.
Condition is good. The surface shows minor scratches and small chips consistent with age and use. Minor losses have been filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
