Danish mahogany veneered shelving unit on splayed legs, 1960s

A Danish shelving unit from the 1960s, veneered in mahogany. The rectangular form rests on slender, splayed solid wood legs finished in black, creating a silhouette typical of Scandinavian modernism — light yet stable. The warm, rich tone of the mahogany veneer lends the piece an elegance that complements both light and darker interiors with equal ease.

The structure divides the interior into two vertical sections fitted with adjustable shelves. This flexibility allows the configuration to be tailored to items of varying heights, from smaller paperbacks to tall binders and portfolios. The open design forgoes doors and drawers in favour of immediate access and visual lightness. Angled legs set the body above the floor, adding a sense of dynamism while making the surrounding space feel more open.

The 1960s marked a high point for Danish furniture production, when craftsmanship and the democratic ideal of good design converged to create pieces that were both refined and widely accessible. Storage systems and shelving units answered the practical demands of compact modern homes, offering functionality without visual weight. Mahogany veneer, favoured throughout this period, provided an appearance of luxury while remaining attainable for a broad audience.

This shelving unit serves well as a home library, a display for vinyl records, or a stage for ceramics and collected objects. Its depth accommodates books of various formats comfortably, and the generous height delivers ample storage without dominating the room.

The piece is in good condition, with minor scratches and small chips consistent with decades of use. Small losses have been professionally filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
