Danish solid mahogany mirror with slatted shelf, 1970s

Danish solid teak mirror from the 1970s, featuring a distinctive slatted shelf at its base. This piece exemplifies the Scandinavian approach to everyday objects — combining straightforward function with thoughtful formal solutions that elevate it beyond ordinary decorative mirrors.

The construction relies on a substantial solid wood frame that surrounds the mirror glass with consistent width on all sides. The proportions — decidedly vertical — lend the piece an elegant, slender silhouette. The lower section concludes with a shelf composed of parallel wooden slats, creating a rhythmic pattern of distinctly modernist character. This solution serves a dual purpose: it provides visual closure to the composition while offering space for small objects. The mahogany wood, with its warm brown tone, has retained its natural grain pattern, lending the surface considerable depth.

The 1970s in Danish design marked a period when formal minimalism reached full maturity. Designers focused on objects intended to serve for decades — hence the choice of solid wood over cheaper materials and construction free of superfluous decoration. Mirrors incorporating functional elements aligned with the concept of complete furniture requiring no additional accessories. The Scandinavian craft tradition emphasised quality execution of every detail, even in seemingly simple objects.

This mirror is designed for vertical hanging. Standing over one hundred thirty centimetres tall, it allows comfortable full-length viewing. The shelf at the bottom accommodates keys, jewellery, or cosmetics — items we reach for when leaving home. Suitable for an entrance hall, bedroom, or dressing room.

Condition is good, consistent with the age of the piece.
