Description
A Danish dining table from the 1970s, representing the mature phase of Scandinavian modernism. The design combines formal simplicity with considered functionality — crafted for everyday use without compromising the aesthetic discipline that defined Danish furniture of this period.
The construction features a teak-veneered top set upon four solid wood legs. These slender supports, tapering gently towards the floor, lend the piece a visual lightness despite the substantial proportions of the tabletop. The frame beneath conceals a practical detail: a built-in compartment for storing extension leaves that allow the surface to expand significantly. The extending mechanism integrates so seamlessly into the structure that it remains virtually invisible when the table is closed.
The 1970s marked a period when Danish furniture production had reached full industrial maturity. Small workshops had given way to factories, yet this transition did not mean sacrificing quality — on the contrary, Danish manufacturers demonstrated that industrial scale could coexist with design integrity. Extending tables became one of the era's most popular forms, responding to evolving domestic needs: smaller living spaces demanded flexible furniture, capable of adapting to both daily meals and larger gatherings.
The table offers a surface width of nearly one hundred and thirty centimetres, which the leaves extend to almost two hundred and twenty. This allows comfortable seating for a larger group of guests, while the closed configuration keeps the piece from dominating the dining area. The integrated storage ensures the extra leaves remain conveniently at hand.
The piece is in good condition, bearing natural signs of decades of use: minor surface scratches and small chips on the top, along with slight losses that have been professionally filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
