Figural ceramic platter with putti, openwork form with gilt accents, Art Deco style, Europe

A figural ceramic platter featuring putti motifs, this piece brings together classicizing tradition with the decorative richness characteristic of European art ceramics. The openwork form and gilded accents give it a distinctly representational character an object created for display rather than everyday use, designed to anchor an interior with presence and refinement.

The construction centers on an oval body with pierced walls forming a delicate, lace-like pattern throughout. The putti figures are integral to the composition, sculpted as part of the vessel's structure rather than applied separately. Gilding highlights the sculptural details and traces the edges of the openwork, creating contrast against the polychrome glazed surface. The proportions notably taller than typical serving platters — reveal its intended decorative purpose.

Figural ceramics featuring mythological and allegorical imagery flourished across Europe from the eighteenth century onward, as porcelain and faience manufactories competed in artistic achievement. Putti — winged childlike figures drawn from classical and Renaissance iconography became among the most enduring decorative motifs, symbolizing abundance, love, and joie de vivre. This tradition persisted through stylistic shifts, adapting to Baroque exuberance, refined Neoclassicism, and later reinterpretations that carried echoes into Art Deco sensibilities.

The platter works beautifully as a focal point on a sideboard, console table, or within a glass-fronted cabinet. Its dimensions and vertical composition allow it to stand alone without requiring accompanying pieces. The pierced structure benefits from a calm, solid background that lets the intricate detail speak for itself.

Condition is good, with no significant flaws affecting the aesthetic quality of the piece.
