Bio Alleva plastic cup set in yellow, European design from the 1980s

This set of Bio Alleva cups in vibrant yellow represents a distinctive example of 1980s European design sensibility. Manufactured from synthetic material, these vessels combine minimalist form with the bold colour palette that defined the decade, when plastics gained increasing acceptance in everyday product design.

The construction relies on a simple cylindrical form with walls that flare slightly toward the rim. The proportions of height to diameter ensure stability during use, while the smooth, unadorned surface emphasises the minimalist character of the design. Each handle has been shaped ergonomically for a secure grip. The cohesive appearance extends throughout the uniform yellow covers both the body and handle without interruption.

The 1980s brought a marked shift in European design thinking, with synthetic materials emerging as legitimate alternatives to traditional ceramics and porcelain. This transition was not purely economic designers recognised that new materials offered possibilities for intense, lasting colours and forms unachievable through conventional methods. Yellow, alongside red and turquoise, became one of the defining hues of the era's aesthetic vocabulary.

These cups serve equally well in the kitchen or during outdoor dining. The synthetic construction provides lightness and resistance to breakage, making them a practical choice for everyday use. Standing just under nine centimetres tall with a diameter of eight centimetres, each cup accommodates a standard serving of coffee or tea comfortably.

The set remains in good condition with no significant flaws. The surfaces show no notable signs of wear from previous use.
