Art Deco Figural Ceramic Candleholder with Genre Scene, European Manufacture

A ceramic figural candleholder featuring a multi-figure genre scene, originating from a European manufactory. This piece combines practical function with decorative artistry, presenting a figurative composition bearing distinct characteristics of Art Deco styling. The glazed surface rendered in a polychrome palette lends the work a vivid, painterly quality characteristic of interwar ceramic production.

The composition centers around a group of figures whose dynamic arrangement forms the foundation for the candleholder element. The figures are captured in motion or gesture, giving the scene a narrative dimension that transcends mere utility. The proportions thirty-two centimeters in height with a base measuring twenty-two by fourteen centimeters allow for an elaborate scenic arrangement while maintaining formal cohesion. Multiple glazed tones model the details of costumes and facial features across the surface.

Art Deco, the prevailing style in European decorative arts during the 1920s and 1930s, introduced narrative and figural elements into functional ceramics. Candleholders of this type emerged from numerous manufactories across Central and Western Europe, where artistic ceramic traditions often reached back to the eighteenth century. Objects combining lighting function with sculptural decoration gained popularity as salon and dining room furnishings, offering an alternative to brass and crystal candelabras.

This candleholder serves well as a focal point on a sideboard or table, functioning either practically or as pure decoration. Its dimensions allow for standalone display without need for accompanying objects.

Condition is assessed as good, with no significant flaws noted. The glaze and ceramic structure have maintained their integrity.
