Description

Norwegian modular shelving designed by Kjell Riise and manufactured by Brødrene Jåtog Møbelfabrikk in the 1960s. The system combines generous storage capacity with the lightness of form characteristic of Scandinavian design — vertical wall-mounted rails support both open shelves and closed cabinets, all finished in warm teak veneer that unifies the composition.

The structure relies on four vertical rails fixed to the wall, forming the backbone of the entire system. The current configuration includes twelve shelves arranged at varying heights and four cabinets creating a continuous band of enclosed storage along the base. The cabinets feature doors concealing interior space as well as drawers fitted with distinctive horizontal pulls. Every element can be repositioned along the rails, and the modular nature of the system allows for expansion or reconfiguration at any time.

Norwegian furniture design of the 1960s developed alongside its Danish counterpart, yet cultivated a somewhat more restrained character suited to practical Scandinavian living. Kjell Riise created wall systems produced by Norwegian manufacturers, while Brødrene Jåtog Møbelfabrikk specialised in pieces crafted from teak and rosewood. Modular furniture answered the shifting demands of post-war households, where heavy built-in units gave way to flexible, adaptable solutions that could evolve with their owners.

Spanning nearly four metres in width, this shelving unit serves well as the principal storage piece in a living room or home office. Open shelves provide display space for books, ceramics and decorative objects, while the closed cabinets keep documents, equipment and everyday items out of sight. The system works equally well in studios or professional spaces where presentation and practical storage must coexist.

The unit remains in good condition. Minor scratches and small chips are visible from years of use, and slight losses have been filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
