Description

PS System modular shelving designed by Preben Sørensen — a Danish piece from the 1970s that combines considered functionality with the lightness of form characteristic of Scandinavian design. The system was conceived as a flexible storage solution, where every element can be rearranged and configured according to the user's evolving needs.

The construction rests on three vertical rails of solid wood, painted black, which form the backbone of the entire system. Suspended from them are seven shelves and two drawer cabinets — all finished in teak veneer. The shelves, with a depth of twenty centimetres, serve as display surfaces, while the cabinets offer greater depth for documents and items requiring concealment. Every element can be adjusted to different heights, and the modular design allows the layout to be changed or extended with additional components. The presented configuration is just one of many possibilities — the set adapts to changing requirements.

Preben Sørensen belongs to the generation of Danish designers who developed the concept of system furniture throughout the 1960s and 1970s. This was an era when heavy, traditional built-ins gave way to lighter forms — furniture that could grow with a household and adapt to successive moves. Wall-mounted systems democratised good design, offering craft-level quality in an accessible, modular format.

Spanning nearly two and a half metres in width, this set organises an entire wall — from books and albums on open shelves, through documents tucked away in drawers, to decorative objects displayed at varying heights. It works equally well in a living room or an office environment.

The unit has been preserved in very good condition. Minor surface scratches are visible, and small losses have been filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
