Description
Modular shelving from Poul Cadovius's Royal System, manufactured by the Danish brand CADO during the 1960s. This pioneering wall-mounted system, which defined an entire category of furniture suspended above the floor, represents one of the most recognizable achievements of Scandinavian design. The warm orange veneer gives this set a distinctive character, setting it apart from the classic, muted variations of this iconic project.
The structure relies on four solid wood wall rails that form the backbone of the entire system. Eleven shelves arranged at varying heights and a closed cabinet with a pair of doors hang from these uprights. Every element can be repositioned vertically, and the overall layout can be reconfigured at will — the very essence of Cadovius's vision of furniture that adapts to changing household needs. The current arrangement combines expansive open display space with the discreet storage of the enclosed cabinet.
Poul Cadovius introduced the Royal System in 1948 as a response to shrinking post-war living spaces. Instead of heavy floor-standing furniture, he proposed lightweight wall-hung constructions that visually enlarged interiors and freed up the floor beneath them. The CADO system, an evolution of this idea, was also manufactured under license outside Denmark and became one of Danish design's most successful exports. Cadovius's influence is visible in countless later modular systems — his concept proved timeless.
The shelving unit works well as a central organizing element in a living room or study. Shelves with depths of twenty and twenty-four centimeters accommodate books, albums, and collectibles, while the cabinet at thirty centimeters deep conceals documents or equipment. The option to expand the system with additional modules allows it to grow alongside evolving storage needs.
The piece is in very good condition, with minor scratches and small chips consistent with regular use over the decades.
