Description

A lounge chair by Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen, produced by Fritz Hansen in the 1970s. This design exemplifies the collaborative strength of two figures trained under Kaare Klint, whose influence shows in the chair's balanced proportions and honest construction. The pairing of solid oak with black leather creates a composition that feels both grounded and refined, characteristic of the duo's measured approach to form.

The frame rises from four tapered legs joined by a curved stretcher that reinforces the structure while adding visual lightness to the base. Armrests flow naturally from the rear uprights, curving gently forward to meet the front legs in a continuous line. The seat and backrest appear as separate, generous cushions wrapped in leather, their rounded edges softening the geometry of the oak skeleton beneath. This separation between frame and upholstery allows each material to express its character—the warmth and grain of the wood visible alongside the supple surface of the leather.

Larsen and Madsen belonged to a generation of Danish designers who believed furniture should reveal how it was made. Their work, typically executed by smaller workshops, found an exceptional production partner in Fritz Hansen. The Copenhagen manufacturer had pioneered bent plywood techniques since the early twentieth century and maintained rigorous standards that matched the designers' exacting vision. This chair represents a meeting point between artisanal design principles and industrial capability, where craftsmanship remained visible despite serial production.

Two chairs are available, suited to spaces where seating combines with conversation—a living room, study, or reading corner. The moderate depth and firm cushioning support an upright posture without sacrificing comfort. Armrests provide natural support whether one is reading, working, or simply resting.

Condition is good with minor scratches and small chips to the oak frame consistent with age. The upholstery has been renewed with fresh foam, ensuring the seating retains its intended support and comfort.
