Description
Glass platter from Kosta Boda glassworks, produced in Sweden during the 1960s. The piece combines Scandinavian simplicity with the organic character typical of post-war art glass — the thick, clear glass mass retains traces of hand-forming that give the object its individual expression.
The platter takes the form of a shallow dish with irregular, softly rounded edges. The glass surface features a delicate texture reminiscent of natural materials such as stone or ice. Wall thickness varies gradually from the more substantial base toward the thinner rim, creating an effect of the glass mass becoming progressively lighter. The whole rests on a small, stable foot.
Kosta Boda ranks among the oldest operating glassworks in Europe, with origins reaching back to the mid-eighteenth century. The 1960s marked a period of intense artistic development for Swedish glasshouses, attracting designers who experimented with colour, form, and texture. Kosta Boda distinguished itself through bold combinations of craft tradition with modern design, creating objects that bridged functional art and pure decoration.
The platter works equally well as a fruit dish or as a standalone decorative element. Its nineteen-centimetre diameter suits placement on a dining table as readily as on a shelf or sideboard, where the thick glass mass catches and diffuses light.
