Danish teak sideboard from the 1970s – low profile design with three drawers, Scandinavian Modern

A Danish sideboard from the 1970s, representing the mature phase of Scandinavian modernism. The low, elongated silhouette stretching nearly one hundred and eighty centimetres recalls designs conceived for the open-plan living spaces that gained popularity during that decade. Teak veneer covering the entire structure lends the piece a warm, orange-brown tone characteristic of Danish design from this period.

The construction centres on three drawers arranged across the full width of the front, fitted with oval recessed pulls that sit flush with the surface. The slender cabinet rests on a wooden base with a light, frame-like construction — legs joined by stretchers create a stable yet visually unimposing support. The proportions emphasise horizontality: low height combined with considerable width makes the piece optically extend the space it occupies. An oil or wax finish preserves the natural texture of the veneer, allowing the teak grain to define the character of each surface.

The 1970s in Denmark marked a period when furniture design began moving away from the austere forms of early modernism toward warmer, more domestic solutions. Manufacturers combined the industrial efficiency of engineered board with the craft tradition of veneering in noble timber, meeting the needs of a middle class seeking quality in an accessible form.
