Description

A Danish coffee table from the 1970s, finished in teak veneer — a piece with proportions characteristic of Scandinavian design from that era. The low, horizontal silhouette gives it the character of a lowboard, a form that bridges the coffee table and the floor-level shelf. The warm tone of the teak veneer contrasts with the dark legs, creating a striking colour composition.

The construction centres on a rectangular top with softly rounded edges, set on four tapered solid wood legs. Painted black, these legs provide a visual frame for the warmth of the tabletop while their placement ensures stability despite the modest height. The board core is clad in teak veneer, combining durability with the distinctive grain pattern of this much-prized wood. The proportions — considerable width paired with limited depth and low height — lend the piece a sense of lightness and allow it to fit even compact spaces.

The 1970s in Danish furniture-making marked a period when the minimalist forms developed over previous decades reached a broader audience. Teak, once reserved for premium pieces, appeared as veneer on everyday objects. Lowboards and low tables reflected a contemporary tendency toward horizontal living — instead of tall furniture dominating a room, designers proposed forms closer to the floor, creating an impression of openness and spaciousness.

This coffee table works naturally in front of a sofa, yet its elongated shape also suits placement along a wall — for displaying books, magazines, or small objects. Standing just twenty-eight centimetres high, it pairs well with low-slung sofas and lounge chairs typical of mid-century modern interiors.

The piece is in good condition, with traces of use consistent with its age. The surface shows minor scratches and small chips. Small losses have been filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
