Description

A Danish coffee table from the 1960s, embodying the refined simplicity that defined Scandinavian furniture at its peak. The low, elongated form recalls the bench-style tables favoured in Danish interiors of the era, where furniture was designed for informal, relaxed living. A teak-veneered top rests on a metal base, creating the dialogue between natural warmth and industrial restraint that characterised the period's most considered designs.

The construction relies on economy of means and careful proportion. A narrow, horizontal top maintains balance between visual lightness and structural stability, while legs positioned inward from the edges create a sense of the surface floating above the floor. Teak veneer covers the entire top, preserving continuity of grain across the surface. Black metal legs provide a crisp contrast against the warm timber — a solution frequently employed by Danish designers who bridged traditional woodworking craft with modern industrial materials.

The 1960s marked the moment when Danish furniture achieved global reach. Workshops across the country produced pieces for international markets, combining functionality and accessible pricing with uncompromising standards of manufacture. Low coffee tables became essential components of the modernist living room, their horizontal lines harmonising with low-slung sofas and lounge chairs. These interiors were oriented toward conversation and repose rather than formal display, and furniture was scaled accordingly.

This coffee table works in front of a sofa or beside a lounge chair, offering a surface for a cup, a few books, or small objects within easy reach. The low profile allows access without rising, while the narrow depth keeps circulation routes clear.

The piece is in good condition with traces of use consistent with its age. The surface shows minor scratches and small scuffs. Minor losses have been filled during restoration. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
