Danish teak tallboy chest of drawers from the 1960s

A Danish chest of drawers from the 1960s, veneered in teak, embodies the finest qualities of Scandinavian design from this era. The slender silhouette and carefully considered details come together in a piece that balances elegance with functionality — no superfluous ornament, just quality craftsmanship and harmonious proportions.

The construction comprises six drawers arranged vertically, forming a unified, upright volume. The drawer fronts feature no conventional handles; instead, they incorporate the characteristic Danish Modern solution of lip pulls carved from the upper edge of each front. This approach lends the piece its minimalist character while emphasising the continuity of the teak veneer surface. Four tapered solid wood legs raise the body above the floor, visually lightening the form.

The 1960s marked the period when Danish furniture gained international recognition through its marriage of craft tradition and modern design principles. Teak veneer became emblematic of this movement — warm in appearance, durable, and versatile, it perfectly suited the evolving lifestyle of the growing middle class. Vertical chests of drawers, known in Scandinavia as tallboys, offered generous storage within a compact footprint, making them ideal for increasingly modest living spaces.

Six drawers provide ample capacity for clothing, linens, or accessories. The piece works equally well in a bedroom, dressing room, or entrance hall, where its vertical form makes efficient use of available floor space.

This chest of drawers is in good condition, showing minor scratches and small chips consistent with age. Small losses have been filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
