Danish oak veneer chest of drawers with tapered legs, 1980s Scandinavian Modern

A Danish chest of drawers from the 1980s, representing the mature phase of Scandinavian modernism. Its compact dimensions and well-proportioned form maintain the lightness characteristic of Nordic design while offering practical storage space.

The construction features three drawers set within a tight cabinet body finished in oak veneer. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of recessed handles, creating a rhythmic horizontal accent across the front. Slender solid wood legs, painted black, contrast with the warm tone of the oak veneer and visually lift the piece off the floor. This approach — typical of Danish furniture making — lends the chest visual lightness despite its solid build.

The 1980s in Danish design marked a period of continuity with traditions established by earlier generations of furniture makers. Scandinavian manufacturers maintained high production standards even as mass manufacturing grew more competitive elsewhere. Oak veneer, widely used during this period, allowed workshops to combine economical board construction with the aesthetic qualities of natural wood. The result served two purposes: accessible pricing and an appearance worthy of craft heritage.

This chest of drawers works well as a bedside table, where three drawers accommodate everyday small items. A depth of just over thirty centimetres allows placement in a narrow hallway or as an accent piece in a living room. The compact top surface offers space for a lamp, book, or decorative object.

The piece is in good condition, showing natural signs of use: minor scratches and small chips on the surface, along with slight losses that have been filled.
