Description

Danish modular shelving from the 1970s, representing the mature phase of Scandinavian system furniture design. Teak veneer covering the shelves and cabinet contrasts with black wall rails, creating a striking composition characteristic of Danish modernism from this decade. The presented set includes ten shelves, one cabinet, and four wall rails — all elements freely configurable according to individual needs.

The construction relies on vertical rails mounted to the wall, forming the backbone of the entire system. Shelves and the cabinet hang from these rails and can be positioned at various heights. The modular design allows for continuous adaptation — spacing shelves evenly or grouping them into zones, adding new elements as collections grow. The cabinet provides concealed storage for items requiring discretion, while open shelves serve display purposes.

The 1970s in Denmark marked the peak of wall system popularity. These designs answered the needs of a post-war generation that valued flexibility over monumentality. Traditional, massive bookcases gave way to lightweight constructions that could grow alongside their owners — from a modest shelf arrangement to an expansive wall filled with books and mementos. Danish manufacturers simultaneously perfected veneering techniques, achieving the noble appearance of teak while making rational use of this precious material.

The unit spans nearly two hundred and fifty centimetres in width and reaches two metres in height. Shelves with a depth of twenty centimetres accommodate books and albums comfortably, while the cabinet at thirty-nine centimetres deep holds documents and larger objects. The expandable nature of the system means the set can grow alongside its owner's collection.

The piece remains in very good condition, with minor scratches and small chips acquired through years of use.
