Danish rosewood veneered bookcase with bar cabinet, Vemb Møbelfabrik, 1970s

A Danish bookcase with a bar from the 1970s, manufactured by Vemb Møbelfabrik. The piece combines the function of a bookcase with a discreetly concealed bar, offering a solution characteristic of the Scandinavian approach to organising space — everything has its place, while elegance does not come at the expense of practicality.

The design consists of two open sections with adjustable shelves, creating the main display space. Between them is a central module combining storage and serving functions — a drop-down surface opens to reveal an interior with drawers for bar accessories, as well as a decorative patterned mirror, with space in front of it for glassware and bottles. The whole piece rests on slender solid wood legs, which visually lighten the substantial form and give it an elegant sense of lightness despite its generous proportions. Rosewood veneer covers all elements, creating a cohesive, warm surface in a deep brown tone. The black backing of the open shelves provides an elegant contrast to lighter objects placed within them.

Vemb Møbelfabrik was among the Danish manufacturers that, during the 1970s, continued the tradition of combining careful craftsmanship with functional design. Scandinavian modernism of the period was evolving towards more sophisticated forms of utility — furniture was no longer simply a collection of individual objects, but increasingly became a system for organising everyday life. A bookcase with an integrated bar responded to the changing way of living, in which the living room served both a representational and social function.

The adjustable shelves allow the layout to be adapted to the height of books and albums, while the depth of just under 31 centimetres means that the piece does not overwhelm the room despite its nearly two-metre width. The bar section provides ample space for everything needed when entertaining guests, from glassware to cocktail accessories.

The bookcase has been preserved in good condition. Minor scratches and surface marks are visible, while small areas of loss have been filled during conservation. More significant signs of use are also shown in the photographs to provide the most accurate representation possible of the piece’s actual condition.
