Description
A Danish shelving unit from the 1960s, produced by ÆJM Møbler. This compact piece resting on distinctive splayed legs embodies the Scandinavian modern aesthetic while offering practical storage solutions. The ash veneer in a warm, yellowish tone gives the design a sense of lightness, accentuated by the contrasting black legs.
The construction follows a straightforward open-box form set upon four angled solid wood legs. Inside, an adjustable shelf allows the interior to be configured according to the height of stored items. The absence of doors or closed compartments maintains visual transparency — contents remain visible, creating a kind of domestic display. The proportions are carefully balanced: the width slightly exceeds the height, while the shallow depth ensures the piece does not overpower the room.
The 1960s marked a period when Danish furniture design reached full maturity while simultaneously becoming accessible to a broader audience. Alongside celebrated designers, numerous smaller manufacturers like ÆJM Møbler produced furniture in the Danish Modern spirit — combining careful craftsmanship with contemporary form. Shelving units on splayed legs became one of the era's recognizable motifs, merging practical storage with the lightness demanded by increasingly compact living spaces. This approach to furniture reflected a democratic ideal: good design available to everyday households.
The shelving unit works well as a bookcase, a home for vinyl records, or a compact library in a living room or study. The depth of just under thirty centimetres allows placement in narrower spaces as well, such as an entrance hall or beside a desk. The open construction provides easy access to contents and invites personal arrangement.
The piece is in good condition with traces of use typical for items from the period. Minor scratches are visible on the veneer surface, along with small chips to the edges. Minor losses have been filled during conservation. The manufacturer's mark ÆJM Møbler A/S confirms the authenticity of this example. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
