Description
A Danish chest of drawers from the 1970s, finished in ash veneer with a warm, light tone. The tall silhouette resting on short solid wood legs reflects the Scandinavian design ethos of that decade — furniture meant to be functional yet visually pleasing and comfortable in everyday use.
The construction pairs a simple form with a distinctive detail. Each drawer front features a pair of round, turned wooden knobs crafted from the same timber as the rest of the piece, creating a rhythmic pattern across the facade. This repetition gives the chest a clear visual identity while preventing the minimalist shape from feeling monotonous. The vertical proportions — narrow and tall — were characteristic of Danish furniture design in the seventies, when makers sought to maximise storage capacity without sacrificing visual lightness.
Danish design of this period built upon the legacy of earlier masters while gradually shifting away from expensive hardwoods toward more accessible materials. Ash, lighter in colour and more affordable than rosewood or teak, allowed manufacturers to maintain craft quality at lower cost. This shift responded to changing economic conditions and growing demand for well-designed furniture at reasonable prices across European households.
Six generous drawers accommodate clothing, linens and household sundries. The slender footprint suits bedrooms, hallways or compact living rooms where floor space is at a premium. Standing over a metre tall, the chest allows comfortable access to upper drawers without excessive bending.
The chest is in good condition, showing minor scratches and small chips consistent with regular domestic use. Small losses have been filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
