Teak Sideboard by Westergaards Møbelfabrik with Sliding Doors, Danish Design 1970s

A sideboard from the Danish manufacturer Westergaards Møbelfabrik, produced in the 1970s. The horizontal silhouette resting on slender, tapered legs exemplifies the Scandinavian design approach of that decade — the piece appears light despite its considerable storage capacity.

Three sliding doors travel along the length of the cabinet, revealing successive sections without requiring clearance in front of the piece. This practical solution makes the sideboard well suited to compact living spaces. Teak veneer in warm orange-brown tones covers the fronts, while recessed elongated pulls maintain the clean surface. Black painted legs create a deliberate contrast with the wooden body, visually lifting the cabinet off the floor. Inside, adjustable shelves and drawers allow the interior to be configured according to changing needs.

The 1970s marked a period when Danish furniture makers increasingly favoured compact, multifunctional forms. The sideboard emerged as an essential piece of the modern interior, combining the roles of credenza, buffet and media console. Teak veneer remained the preferred finish, valued for its warm hue and distinctive grain pattern that aged gracefully over time.

The generous width accommodates tableware, household textiles, documents or a vinyl collection. The top surface serves as a display area or a platform for audio equipment. A depth of under forty centimetres ensures the piece fits comfortably even in narrower rooms without obstructing movement.

Condition is good. Minor scratches and small chips consistent with age and use are present. Small losses have been filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
