Description

Danish teak-veneered shelving unit from the 1970s, combining open display space with concealed storage in a single, cohesive piece. The design reflects the Danish Modern approach to furniture — functional forms executed with care for material and proportion, built to serve daily life without visual excess.

The unit divides into three distinct zones unified by warm teak veneer covering all surfaces. Open shelving at the top provides space for books and objects, while the middle section features a drop-down front that reveals an illuminated bar compartment with a mirrored back — a practical solution for entertaining that stays hidden when not in use. The base comprises a two-door cabinet offering additional closed storage. Brass hardware punctuates each section: squared plates with recessed pulls that complement the wood's tone without competing for attention. The adjustable shelving allows the interior arrangement to adapt to changing needs, whether for taller bottles, stacked books, or decorative pieces.

This piece emerged during the final flourishing of Denmark's golden age of furniture design. By the 1970s, Danish manufacturers had refined their production methods to make quality design accessible beyond the workshop tradition. The integration of a lit bar compartment with mirror reflects changing domestic rituals of the era — the home as a place for socialising, not merely residing. Such combination pieces answered the practical needs of smaller Scandinavian apartments while maintaining the warmth and craftsmanship that distinguished Danish furniture from industrial alternatives elsewhere.

The generous depth accommodates barware, albums, and larger volumes with ease. Standing at 176 centimetres, the unit works equally well in a living room, study, or dining area — anywhere that benefits from storage that conceals as much as it displays.

The piece is in good condition with minor scratches and small chips, some of which have been filled. Surface wear is visible in places. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
