Description
A Danish secretary desk from the 1970s, veneered in teak, combining the functions of a writing desk and a chest of drawers. The design emerges from the Scandinavian tradition where furniture served everyday life rather than merely decorating it. The gently curved top rail of the upper section lends the piece a sense of lightness despite its compact proportions.
The structure divides into two zones. The upper section features an open shelf and compartments on either side. Among the original pull-out elements, the writing surface and a small mirror have been preserved — a solution typical of writing desks that also served as dressing tables. Below, three drawers without visible handles create an uninterrupted, serene front surface. Opening is achieved by gripping the edge, reinforcing the minimalist character of the whole. The piece rests on straight, tapered solid wood legs.
The 1970s marked a period of maturity for Danish furniture design, building on decades of international acclaim. Manufacturers successfully combined craft-level care with more accessible materials — particleboard covered in teak veneer maintained an elegant appearance at a reasonable price. The secretary desk as a form experienced a revival during this era, answering the needs of smaller dwellings by offering workspace, storage, and daily organisation within a single compact piece.
The pull-out writing surface at nearly seventy centimetres accommodates comfortable work with a standard chair or stool. The drawers hold documents, correspondence, and small items, while the open compartments in the gallery suit everyday objects kept close at hand. The desk occupies minimal floor space against a wall, making it a practical solution for a bedroom, study, or compact hallway.
The piece is in good condition, showing traces typical of a piece from the 1970s: minor scratches and scuffs on the veneer surface, along with small losses that have been filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
