Description

A Danish secretary desk from the 1960s, veneered in walnut, combines a writing surface with practical drawer storage. The distinctive silhouette featuring a pronounced upper section and slender solid wood legs exemplifies the Scandinavian design philosophy of that era, when compact, multifunctional furniture began replacing heavy traditional pieces.

The structure divides into two zones unified within a single cohesive form. The lower section houses three drawers fitted with round, turned pulls that establish a rhythmic pattern across the facade. The upper compartment opens to reveal an interior with divided storage, while a pull-out writing surface extends to a comfortable working height of seventy-two centimetres. The sides of the superstructure rise above the desk level, creating subtle walls that frame a display shelf at the very top. Four tapered legs support the piece, characteristic of Danish furniture craftsmanship from this period.

Danish design of the 1960s emerged from a practical response to changing domestic life. As living spaces grew smaller, furniture needed to serve multiple purposes without dominating a room. Secretary desks embodied this ethos perfectly—offering a dedicated workspace that could be closed away, concealing papers and supplies from view when not in use. The choice of walnut veneer, warmer than the ubiquitous teak, appealed to those seeking traditional elegance within a modern form.

The extending writing surface creates a practical workstation for correspondence or laptop use, while the desk maintains a compact profile when closed. Three drawers accommodate documents and office essentials, and the upper shelf provides space for books or decorative objects. A depth of forty-five centimetres allows placement even in narrower hallways or bedrooms.

The piece is in good condition with traces of decades of use: minor scratches and small chips along the edges. Losses in the veneer have been professionally filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
