Description

Danish shelving unit from the 1960s, veneered in rosewood, combining the elegance of Scandinavian design with practical construction. The deep, rich tone of the wood contrasts with the black splayed legs, giving the piece that characteristic lightness associated with Danish modernism of the era.

The design follows a simple, open form with three shelf levels. The upper shelf is adjustable, allowing the arrangement to accommodate taller art books, smaller volumes, or decorative objects as needed. Cable management holes in the back panel provide a practical solution for concealing wires when electronic equipment is placed on the unit. Angled solid wood legs raise the body above the floor, visually lightening the structure and reinforcing its modernist character.

The 1960s marked the golden age of Danish furniture design, when Scandinavian makers developed their own interpretation of modernism — warmer and more attuned to everyday living than the austere forms of continental avant-garde. Rosewood was among the most prized finishing materials of the period, its rich grain pattern emphasising the craftsmanship behind each piece. Open shelving units like this one reflected changing domestic habits, offering a lighter alternative to the heavy bookcases of earlier decades.

This shelving unit works well as a home library, a display for vinyl records, or an exhibition space for ceramics and collected objects. The open construction allows easy access from any angle, while the adjustable shelf provides flexibility in organising the interior.

The piece is in good condition with signs of use consistent with its age. There are minor scratches on the veneer surface and small chips along the edges. Minor losses have been filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
