Description
A pair of large Staffordshire figurines – mantelpiece spaniels, England, 19th-century style.
An authentic pair of decorative Staffordshire spaniels – a classic motif in English ceramics, which from the 18th to the 19th century formed part of stately interiors and were displayed symmetrically on mantelpieces or consoles. The distinctive form, strongly modelled fur, characteristic red muzzles and subtle gilding are all part of the canon of these decorative icons – objects that have been collected for years and are recognised worldwide. Placed in a pair, they function exactly as tradition intended – creating a strong, symmetrical composition characteristic of classic English fireplace arrangements, where such figures served as decorative ‘guardians’ of the space.
Condition: preserved in their original condition; may have minor scratches and normal signs of wear.
